Language and Literature Database (AraBase)
Language and literature studies are among the most dynamic and evolving fields, and universities and academic institutions have established dedicated departments to support and study them. Despite the importance of these fields and the abundance of their intellectual output, they have not received sufficient effort in terms of collecting, organizing, and making this body of work easily accessible to researchers and scholars.
In recognition of this importance, Dar Almandumah devoted years to collecting this scholarly output published in academic journals and periodicals, giving it full attention in terms of collection, organization, and accessibility. This effort resulted in the development of the first specialized Arabic database in this field, serving as the primary source and reference for researchers and scholars by providing the studies and research they need directly and efficiently to their desktops.
Database Coverage:
The Language and Literature Database includes nearly all specialized scholarly journals, academic periodicals, and annual serial publications in its field, published in Arabic across Arab and non-Arab countries, in full text. It also includes conference proceedings and seminar papers in Arabic. The database covers what has been published in Arabic periodicals in the fields of language and literature since 1921 to the present.
The database covers a wide range of language and literature disciplines, including, for example, grammar, morphology, semantics, lexicography, linguistics, applied and comparative linguistics, phonetics, phonology, classical and modern Arabic literature, comparative literature, poetry, rhetoric, criticism, and other related subjects.
All research materials included in AraBase are stored in PDF format identical to the original printed version. Users may browse these digitized materials, print them, or save copies for personal use at a later time.
The modern search interfaces of AraBase, designed in accordance with international standards in information services, are among the database’s key strengths, as they successfully combine precision with ease of use. The database offers several search methods, including Basic Search and Advanced Search. Basic Search provides the fastest and easiest solution for new or less experienced users. Advanced Search, on the other hand, is the preferred option for experienced researchers because of the advanced capabilities and techniques it offers through specific fields such as author, article title, article subject, keywords, source (journal/conference), abstract, and more. These fields may also be searched as exact phrases rather than as separate words.
Among the advanced features provided by the database is the use of Boolean operators such as OR, NOT, and AND, along with filters that refine search results according to the user’s needs, such as filtering by date or material type. Results can also be sorted by title, author, or date, in addition to other advanced search and retrieval tools. The database allows users either to search within specific journals or to conduct a simultaneous comprehensive search across all journals at once. Once search results are retrieved, users may display them in either a brief summary format or a detailed format containing the full bibliographic record for each item. For more information about search methods, users may consult the guide on how to search the database.
Another valuable feature of AraBase is the ability to export the bibliographic data of research materials gathered through search results into the reference lists of the user’s own research. These bibliographic records may be viewed, saved, copied, or printed according to internationally recognized citation styles such as APA, MLA, Turabian, and Chicago.
